Fire Safety Management in the Workplace – What are my Responsibilities as an Employer or Service Provider?
The Regulatory Reform Order 2005 was introduced by the Government to replace existing fire safety legislation with a simple order applicable to all business premises. The RRO provides recommendations and guidance for ensuring that your business is best prepared for reducing the risk of fire. The Regulatory Reform Order of 2005 infers that any person who has a level of control in the business premises must take all reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and make sure that all people in the building can safely escape if there is a fire, including those with mobility issues.
In 2004, the Disability Discrimination Act was changed to cover all employers, no matter how many staff they employ. Regulations state that employers and service providers must make “reasonable adjustments” to their premises to overcome barriers to access in order to ensure equality of employment opportunities for all.
The above guidance applies to your business if you fall within any of the following categories:
- Financial services – banks, building societies and insurance companies
- Health services including hospitals and Doctors surgeries
- Courts, solicitors and advice centres
- Cinemas and theatres
- Transport facilities (but not the vehicles)
- Shops, hotels and restaurants
- Sports centres, sports grounds and parks
- Private education
- Schools, colleges and universities when used for non-educational activities.
